Mayrhofen, in the Ziller Valley, where green pastures meet steep wooded slopes framed by distant snow capped peaks, is a walker's paradise. Walks range from a gentle stroll alongside the fast flowing rivers and waterfalls to more strenuous ascents of the nearby peaks with the help of cable cares if required. Plenty of mountain huts provide refreshments for the weary walker. Mayrhofen offers a variety of shops and cafes, and local attractions including the Zillertal steam railway and the Hintertux glacier. Also the Krimml waterfalls, Swarovski's crystal world, Innsbruck and Salzburg are close enough for a visit. Many miles of easy, well-marked footpaths lead through flower-filled meadows. Chairlifts and mountain railways open up a spectacular walking area.

The comfortable 4 star Hotel Strass is situated in the heart of the town. It retains many homely Austrian features and also offers more modern comforts, including lounge areas, bars and lifts. A leisure spa area with terrace cafe has a wide range of saunas, swimming pools and whirlpools. Outside are large mature gardens, a tennis court, squash courts and sun terraces with loungers offering beautiful alpine views.
